Hand of Ozymandias

Welding Practice

I was visiting my cousins in Radium, BC and decided to learn how to stick weld at their shop. I wanted to create some form of art, so with a bunch of pieces of scrap metal I threw together this hand. The beads are far from perfect. Working with small pieces of rusted metal didn’t help either.

The Name

My favourite poems is “Ozymandias” by Percy Bysshe Shelley. It is about the inevitable complete decline of all leaders, and of the empires they build, however mighty in their own time. This is supposed to be the hand of Ozymandias sticking out from the sand, grasping for life after he has been reduced to nothing. Click here for info about the poem.

I had to guess the joint angles by eye. It was made in a machine shop with no real planning done ahead of time. In between welds, I used my hand as a reference to go by. The page background is a picture of me adding a bead to it.
